Horses: The Peruvian Paso
The Peruvian Paso Horse is distinguishable by a specific four-beat lateral gait called "Paso llano" which is made up of a harmonious pace and punctuated by a smooth ride in which the center of gravity of the horse remains almost stationary. The horse riding is thus comfortable, without vertical bounce. Unlike trotter horse, the developed amble of this horse is especially appropriate for long rides on varied and uneven land.
All of these qualities make up the Peruvian Paso Horse one of the most comfortable horse in the world! It will allow you to ride off the beaten track and discover the preserved nature of Arequipa and of the Colca in privileged conditions.

Seasons
Though sunny during the day, it can also get quite cold at night -- which is not unexpected, since Chivay is higher than Cusco! The Colca Valley is lush and green after the heaviest rains from January to March, but most of the rest of the year it is arid and dusty.
The Colca Valley is usually sunny during the day, with temperatures which can reach 30°C, but also can go under 0°C during the camp overnight (especially in July and August). The Desert of “La Joya” is sunny during the entire year and can reach temperatures of 38°C degrees during the day. During the desert rides may occur strong winds, and that’s why we recommend using a “bandana” to protect your mouth and nose.
Dry season (mid April to mid November)
Temperatures usually fall at night and reach 15-20°C during the daytime.
Rainy season (end of November to end of March)
The changes in temperature are less dramatic as the overcast sky impedes the penetration of the sun’s rays and the heating of the atmosphere during the day.
Special Note - High altitude
This ride takes place at high altitudes (2000 to 4500 meters above sea level) and therefore, it is suggested to consume Coca leaves and Coca teas during the first days of the trip. This should help the organism to adapt to the high altitude.
Luggage - recommended large suitcase (51 x 71cm) and small bag (backpack).
There is a weight restriction of 23kg on the Avianca flight.
For those who choose the 10-day option, note that you will only be able to bring one piece of hand luggage (backpack/handbag) per person during your trip to Aguas Calientes. This hand luggage should weight no more than 08 kg/17 lb and with dimensions of no more 46 linear inches / 118 linear cm (height + length + width).
You will be able to leave your large suitcase at the hotel in Cusco.
For the riding tour, you will be provided with a saddle bag that can hold rain gear, camera, a bottle of water, and snacks). It’s a good idea to bring plastic liners in case of rain.
-Scarf or bandana to protect from the sun and the dust
-Sun glasses
-Hat or cap
-Sun cream
-Lipstick
-Hydrating Cream
-Flash light
-Swim suit and towel
-Ear plug (optional)
-Winter clothes for the night (it is sunny and warm during the day, 25 to 30 degrees) – it can go to zero outside at night in June, July and August
-Gloves and woolly hat (in case that you don’t have, it is possible to buy it in Arequipa city or on the way to Colca Valley)
-Rain coat (even if rain is very unlikely at this season but it’s practical when it’s windy).
-Personal equestrian items (optional).
