Wild Mustangs - A Living Legacy
California
USA
The hills north of Boundary Peak look far too barren to support any animals larger than a chipmunk. Yet, ride deep into this high desert along the Nevada/California border, and you'll find cool springs, a few emerald meadows--and the wildest mustang herd in North America
Track wild horses and relive the old west in the seldom visited Pizona area of the lnyo National Forest. From a central meadow camp, riders will track the mustangs in their natural pinyon forest habitat. Observe and photograph present day herds and wildflowers. Enjoy spectacular sunsets of the Sierra and White Mountains while the cook prepares dinner over an open fire. Later, around the campfire, our experienced tracker guides will, share their knowledge of the wild horses and other wildlife. Learn about the social behavior of the horses and their current struggle. This is a trip for those who would like to experience the life of a cowboy out on the range. An active, riding trip for people of all ages and riding levels. The group will operate from base camp and will ride out each day to the open range by high mountains. Don't miss four days of hospitality, home cooking and the thrill of Western life.
The scenery is spectacular and if you haven't experienced camping in this part of California, you will be pleasantly surprised. The vistas of the Sierra from Yosemite to Mt. Whitney to the west and of Boundary Peak and the White.

MUSTANGS ... A LIVING LEGACY We recommend that you spend the night before the ride in Lee Vining, Bishop or Benton Hot Springs. DAY 1: We will meet at River Springs. You will be greeted by your guides, paired with your horse and ride into the Pizona Springs camp. Seminars include map orientation and history of the wild horse. DAYS AT PIZONA: Full day in field, riding out to track and observe horses on open range and watering sites. Periodic stops for viewing, informal discussion and rest. Seminars include social structure and behavior of wild horses, seasonal range ecology and current issues affecting maintenance of free-roaming wild horses. LAST DAY: Take a ride to the western range with lunch before returning to vans at River Springs Roadhead. Seminars today include obtaining, training and using wild horses. The last meal served will be lunch. Expect to arrive at your cars in Bishop by 4 p.m.
MUSIC, MUSTANGS and MULES! WANTED!!! Pickers, Fiddlers, Singers, and all folks that love music and the West! Join Fiddlin' Pete for four days of shared music and horseback riding! Spend two nights at Benton Hot Springs and two nights at Pizona High Camp. We are offering a great opportunity for guests to spend two nights in a room at the Old House Bed & Breakfast at the Hot Springs. You can either camp in a tent at Benton or have a room at the Old House. The last two nights we’ll all camp in tents at our wilderness style camp in Pizona. Itinerary Friday: Check in time after 3 pm at the Old House at Benton Hot Springs. We will have dinner at 6:30 pm and plenty of time to explore the historic buildings and mining town of Benton. (Guests that want to arrive Saturday are welcome to join the trip Saturday morning). Enjoy a musical evening around the campfire. Saturday: Awaken to a great breakfast and jam session. Head out for a leisurely ride to an overlook in the Benton Range. Gather inspiration for a song, at lunch we will share our ideas. We will have of time to tour the ghost town and cattle and buffalo ranch (more song ideas?). At our evening gathering we will craft our song of the day and give everyone a chance to perform! Sunday: After our morning jam session, we will break camp and ride from Benton Hot Springs over the Benton Range into Adobe Valley with spectacular views of the White Mountains and Sierra Nevada. Good opportunity to see wild horses that water at Black Lake. The vast open spaces surrounded by magnificient peaks will give your musical imagination space to roam. We will gather more ideas, and working together, create another song of the day - uniquely our own. Monday:Our morning music session will precede our visit the Pizona high country. We ride through the meadows past Upper Pizona Springs to McNamara Lake and McBride Flats looking for fresh horse tracks. We’ll track horses and look at the new foals in the herd. It will be a full day in the field; we break the trip into groups to allow the more limited riders the opportunity to head back to camp early. Tonight will be our final campfire and song crafting session. Tuesday: One last morning jam session with breakfast, then we will ride back through the hills overlooking Upper Adobe Valley and terminate at River Springs. A van will take guests to Old Benton Hot Springs to your cars, about 3 P.M.
MEMORIAL DAY SPECIAL Join us to ride in Pizona over the long weekend. We’ll help you find camping and reasonable accommodations for the night before the trip. Come early and spend a day at Mule Days.

Dunnage limit is 40 lbs. per person. Bring personal belongings in stout canvas or nylon duffels; ideal size approximately 14" x 32". Sleeping bags can be in separate duffels. Attach name to dunnage, camera, canteen, etc. Tent provided; however, you may bring your own private tent if under 15 pounds; not included in 40 lb. weight limit.
You provide your own alcoholic beverages (if desired). We provide a saddle bag for trail necessities. Please do not bring your own saddlebag unless it is pocket size.
Place all cosmetics, soaps, medications, etc into small plastic containers with close-fitting caps, THEN into sturdy resealable plastic storage bags. If anything breaks or bursts from altitude changes, the plastic bag will contain the spill.
When possible, it is a good idea to transfer alcoholic beverages to sturdy plastic bottles with well fitting caps - it will save weight and protect against breakage.
You will be given a small saddle bag that goes on your saddle horn to carry your lunch and a few personal items. (Weight limit 3 lbs - including lunch).
Remember - try to minimize the weight of your dunnage by packaging only the amount of any item you will need (like soaps, lotions and medications). IMPORTANT INFORMATION
1. We provide a saddle bag for trail necessities. Please do not bring your own saddle bags or day packs unless they are pocket size. Participants may not carry large camera cases with extra lenses on the saddle. If you have extra camera equipment, it can be packed in your duffel or in a safe place on mules.
2. You will be limited to 3 lb. in the saddle bag which includes your lunch. Your jacket and rain gear are not included in the 3 lb. and may be tied on the back of the saddle. No daypacks allowed on riders' backs.
3. Each person is assigned a horse for the duration of the trip with regard to the guests' weight, height, and ability.
4. Dunnage limit is 40 lbs. per person (this includes sleeping bags, fishing equipment, liquor, etc.). There will be a surcharge of $1.50 to $3.00 per pound on dunnage in excess of the 30 lbs. You may bring your own tent if less than 10 lbs. which will not be included in 40 lb. weight limit.
5. Trip fee does not include alcoholic beverages or lodging night before and after trip.
6. Gratuities are optional and a personal choice.
7. Trips will terminate in the late afternoon of last day.
8. We offer Free shuttle back to Rock Creek Pack Station for trips terminating at other road heads.
9. The pack station does not boil or treat water. Campsites are remote enough that we feel safe in using the water. If you want to purify water bring your own filter pump or purification tablets.
10. Reservation form must be accurately completed. The information on age, height, weight and riding ability is used to assign riding animals. Failure to provide accurate information may result in the participant being denied going on the trip with loss of trip fee.
11. We advise guests to purchase cancellation and trip travel insurance.
12. Participants will be sent an assumption of risk and a liability release form. All guests must assume the risk and sign the forms before using Rock Creek's service. Our forms have excellent guidelines for riding safety that we ask you to study.
