Voldseth Working Ranch
Montana
USA
Since the 1870s, Voldseth ranch hands have worked cattle on this traditional Working Ranch. More than a century later very little has changed, except now a place is set at table for you. Today, this working ranch invites visitors who seek seclusion, comfort and personal attention to their individual needs and desires. In this relaxed atmosphere your will find unlimited riding.
Horses are ranch horses and are chosen for you by your level of ability. We have 'tried and true' for the beginners and 'good, fast' cow horses for the more advanced. There are new riding opportunities every day as well as team penning and cattle work. And no head-to-tail riding!!
Rides are varied for any ability, and half-day rides take place every day. Sometimes we organize an all-day ride that takes you to the Indian pictographs. Sweet-smelling cedar log cabins, and the best home-cooking for miles around, entice today’s visitors to this beautiful part of Big Sky country.
No schedules, here, just the opportunity to ride, fish or hike in the sparkling Montana air.
This family-operated ranch runs 1,300 head of cattle on 25,000 acres, and good riders are invited to join in and lend a cow-hand - the work is always there, but so is the fun! Once or twice a week you can join in on cattle work.

Great riding, good ranch horses, and the glory of moving herds of cattle are the reasons most guests come to this ranch. There's no head-to-tail, we let you ride to your ability, and we do lots of it. Riding is our main activity with morning and afternoon rides as well as all day rides. On this family operated ranch, we run 1,200 head of cattle and that means work everyday. It may be putting out salt, checking for sick or injured stock, moving them from pasture to pasture, gathering the bulls-whatever is required, we invite you to join us for experiences that will fit into your "best times" treasure chest. Cattle work is usually once or twice a week. Moving herds from pasture to pasture, bringing the bulls home, checking for sick or injured cattle or moving the cattle to better grass and water is all great fun. Riders should be proficient enough to ride on their own without a wrangler by their side. Experienced riders, join us anytime, but the months of June and September are reserved for you. Any age is fine, but make sure you are very comfortable on a horse and can safely trot and gallop. For those looking for a little variety and sport in their riding, team penning can't be beat! It will test your skills whether a beginner or advanced rider. Who will win... the cows or the riders?? Riding lessons are available Monday morning, and they sure help the beginners learn the ropes a little quicker, and help both horse and rider eliminate some of those sore muscles! Its a good deal at $25 an hour or $15 an hour if you are in a group of 3 or more. Families
We welcome all levels of riders in July and August, and we especially enjoy families. We have lots of horses and will match you to the right horse for your riding ability. Riding for Physically Disabled Riders: We offer specialized riding for those families who love to ride but may have a member who needs a little more help - - we have a special team of people for them, and of course one cabin that is handicapped accessible. Children eight and older can join the trail rides, four and five year olds can ride in the corral. Childcare can be arranged for those three and under while parents are out riding. Families can ride together or children can have their own wrangler. Riding Limitations- You must be physically able to mount your horse unassisted, as we have some all day rides. We do have a weight limit of 225 pounds give or take 25 pounds due to your physical condition. Our insurance company will not allow pregnant women to ride or for you to ride on your own without a wrangler.
Passport and Visa Requirements:
Valid passport required by all nationals referred to in the chart ; validity varies - for most countries the passport must be valid for at least six months from the date on which the holder enters the. more
Hot, cold, warm, sunny, windy, warm, cool, drafty, exquisite...That will cover most of it. Anything is possible in Montana's weather!
June can be quite rainy and cold, with temperatures often ranging from the high-30s at night and early morning to the 80s during the day. August temperatures may be a little warmer, from lows in the 30s or 40s to highs in the upper-90s.
