Allison, I did the Namibia ride in June 2003. It was an amazing ride and one I would repeat in a heartbeat. I still communicate with Waldi, the woman who led the trip. I hope you are fit and ride a lot. If you aren't and you don't I would recommend getting fit. I was fit, I ride 5-6 days a week, hike about 3 miles a day, and swim 3-4 nights a week, plus I added some weight training, and there was one day that by evening I was completely pooped., after riding for about 12 hours. But I found that after that day I just seemed to get stronger. It is a very physically demanding trip. You ride long and hard most days. Hours of posting trotting, lots of canters and some wild hard gallops, flying across the desert. You start up at around 6000 ft just outside of Windhoek, and in May it will be approaching winter there and it is cold, so be prepared, warm clothes, warm sleeping bag. I recommend down, if you have it. As you move down into the desert it gets warmer, but the first couple of nights can be miserable if you aren't prepared. You will have the option to sleep in a tent which will be warmer, but none of us did, we all wanted to sleep on the cots, out in the open.......the southern sky is beyond belief, especially if there isn't a moon. Whew. I can't say enough good things about the trip, very unique country,(the desert was like being on the moon)the horses, I rode Cara, trusted her completely (incredibly strong with iron hooves), the company, interesting like minded people, the leader Waldi, tough exterior, absolutely confident and capable and a heart of gold. The food, I still fantasize about. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact me at my regular email address. conc309@aol.com. I really hope you do the trip, you won't regret it for a moment. My guess it is the hardest, most challenging trip out there and you will have such a sense of accomplishment, If you do contact me put Namibia in the subject line, because your email will probably go into spam. I can't tell you how excited I am for you, I think it is the best trip possible. Connie
